Explore the legendary architect Alvar Aalto’s production from his earliest works through to achievements in the latter stages of his career. The production of the world-famous architect Alvar Aalto, is found extensively in the Jyväskylä region. In the master architect’s footsteps we travel from classicism to functionalism, from brick architecture to monumentalism. Items can be found at close range from the Jyväskylä harbor.
Stay in the uniqueness of the houseboat surrounded by the lake and nature, and sail to the Lake Päijänne to explore the impressive attractions such as an Experimental house in Muuratsalo, a church in Muurame and a town hall in Säynätsalo which is considered one of the most remarkable work in Alvar Aalto’s production. You can also explore the colorful stages of the the master’s life in the Alvar Aalto Museum.
Day 1 – It’s all about Aalto
This journey begins from Jyväskylä harbor. Jyväskylä harbor, the home of Houseboat, is located in a walking distance of Jyväskylä bus and train stations and is easy to access by taxi from Jyväskylä airport. You may also rent a car from Helsinki airport and travel to Jyväskylä under three hours by car.
On a first day, you will be handed over the Houseboat – your accommodation and escape to the serenity. You will be given full instructions on how to use the Houseboat and in case of need, all the help is just a phone call away. Also we will give you some ideas on where to spend your first night on the water. After the instructions, it’s time to enjoy a piece or two of the Alvari cake and a cup of coffee or tea, on a beautiful surrounding of Lake Jyväsjärvi.
Day 2 – Follow the master’s footsteps
On the second morning, you will continue your trip through the Lake Päijänne to Säynätsalo harbour, which will be your second stop. In Säynätsalo, you’ll get to explore Säynätsalo town hall, which is considered one of the most remarkable work in Alvar Aalto’s production! After a tour in Säynätsalo town hall and in the island of Säynätsalo, it’s time to head back in the Lake Päijänne and continue your journey towards the island called Muuratsalo. In the south end of Muuratsalo, you will spend the second night near nature and a sandy beach.
Day 3 – Experience the Experimental house
On the morning of a third day, get a good start for your day by enjoying a breakfast at a deck of the houseboat, while listening to the soft sound of waves lapping at the hull of the boat and the sun is shining from the horizon. After breakfast, you will start to head towards the church of Muurame and an Experimental house of Alvar Aalto in the island of Muuratsalo. After the tours, you can start to head back to the Jyväskylä harbour. During the last night on the lake, you can enjoy the serenity of the water and peace and quietness of the Finnish nature.
Day 4 – Explore the Alvar Aalto’s Jyväskylä
On the morning of the fourth day, you can return the Houseboat to the harbor. In the fourth day you have plenty of time to get to know Alvar Aalto’s production in the city centre of Jyväskylä by bike or foot. Head out to University of Jyväskylä, download a biking route for the architechure in the city center and end your journey with a visit to Alvar Aalto Museum.
